Visio Online is a browser-based version of Microsoft Visio, Office’s vector diagramming app. Visio Online is a 'lite' version of the full-fledged desktop app and provides fast opening times for viewing .vsdx and .vsd files, and editing of .vsdx files. Visio Online is great for viewing Visio files and making simple edits from basically any browser on almost any device. Viewing Visio files is included in all Office 365 subscriptions, but the editing feature requires the purchase of an extra subscription.
Migrate VDW files to work with Visio Online. Visio Online supports VSD, VSDX and VSDM file extensions for viewing Visio files in SharePoint Online. For your VDW files to continue to work, open them in Visio Desktop and save them as VSD or VSDX files to view them with Visio Online. If you want to edit VDW files on the web, we recommend you save. Visio Viewer 2016 can also open Visio XML drawings (.vdx files) saved in Visio 2002, 2003, and 2007. View a drawing with Visio Viewer When you open a drawing with Visio Viewer, the drawing appears inside an Internet Explorer browser window. ★ Supported file types:.vsd,.vdx and.vsdx ★ Supported versions: 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016 Once you’ve installed the extension, you can: ★ Open Visio files from your computer: Click the Lucidchart icon on your toolbar and select “Choose file”, or drag and drop your Visio file onto the page. Feb 24, 2021 Its user interface is quite similar to Visio or some other Microsoft products. I really love its rich built-in diagramming resources like templates and clip art etc. Also the latest 9.4 version allows me to open and edit vsdx and vsd files in higher quality than before. Edraw Max is not online-based, and it’s not open-source.
Visio Online Open Local File
A number of diagram types, with specific shapes, are provided with Visio Online, and a large number of other shapes can be downloaded from the web. Most Visio files will open directly in Visio Online when using SharePoint Online, OneDrive for Business, MS Teams, Yammer, and some other Office 365 apps. Files open initially in reading mode, but to edit the files, simply click the 'Open Diagram' button and choose to 'Edit in Visio', for the desktop, or 'Edit in browser' to use Visio Online directly in the browser.
Functionality in Visio Online is generally limited to day-to-day editing, text entry, connecting shapes, some formatting, and comments. All changes made in Visio Online are saved automatically; there is no save button.
You cannot edit shape data or hyperlinks in Visio Online, or use any of the add-ons provided in the desktop edition. Macros will also not run in Visio Online and protected documents cannot be opened.
If Visio Online doesn't provide the features you need to do the job, simply click the 'Edit in Visio' button in the menu bar to access the desktop version of the app and its more complex features. Visio Pro for Office 365 is compatible with Office 365 and is frequently updated. However, owners of Visio Standard or Professional 2016 can enable them to be compatible.

To open a file in Visio, go to the File menu, which opens the backstage view and click Open. The Recent section lets you directly access the recent drawings that you have opened or saved.
Based on your setup, the Open menu lists some of the file locations that you can browse for Visio drawings. Click Add a Place to add Office 365 SharePoint or OneDrive location for quick access. Alternatively, click Browse and select the Visio drawing from a local or network folder. Visio files have the extension .vsdx.
Once you open a Visio drawing, you will see that the user interface changes according to the drawing.

In the following example, we have opened an org chart and you can observe that the shape stencils corresponding to the org chart are now available in the Shapes pane. In case of this file, you will also notice an Org Chart tab in the Ribbon that gives you additional options for working with the shapes in the chart, and also allows linking the shapes to data from external sources such as Excel.
You can adjust the spacing between individual shapes and also change the height and width of all shapes in one click.

The Compare command in the Organization Data section of the Org Chart tab lets you compare the contents of this org chart with another org chart or diagram open in Visio. The output is generated as an HTML file, which lists out the similarities and differences between the two diagrams.
